Check out the lovely article in the August 1 Beacon about the Garden. The article and picture are by Terry Christopherson (aka The Travelsketcher).   You can find the article on-line @

Mukilteo Community Gardens are snuggled in between houses, tall trees and the Japanese Gulch Trailhead. The project was launched nine years ago by two master-gardeners; they are already planning a ten-year celebration event.

There are 48 raised beds, which are rented. A condition of renting is to donate time to the tending of the 24 “giving gardens” which grow produce that is donated to the Mukilteo and Lynnwood food banks.

Gloria Flatterich, the president of the organization, told me they donate approximately 2,500 pounds of produce each year.

There were four women working at the garden the morning I sketched, from the conversation and laughter it is easy to conclude that they all get much more than just tomatoes and squash for their efforts; friendships grow right alongside the plants.

Gloria told me that the gardens are a place to find solace and refreshment, it makes sense to me; I am certain I will visit again.
